The Super Canine Therapy Dog Program is designed to guide you and your dog in becoming a calm, confident and reliable therapy team capable of making a positive impact within the community. Through structured training and careful assessment, we focus on developing steady temperaments, excellent manners and safe interaction skills so your dog can provide comfort, connection and emotional support in settings such as schools, hospitals, aged care facilities and community services.

Super Canine Therapy Dog Program

The Super Canine Therapy Dog Program supports handlers in training calm, confident and emotionally stable dogs suitable for structured visits within the community. Therapy dogs provide comfort, connection and positive interaction in environments such as schools, hospitals, aged care facilities, disability services and community programs.

Unlike assistance dogs, therapy dogs work alongside their handler to benefit multiple people, rather than performing specific disability-related tasks for one individual.

Program Requirements

To commence formal training, dogs must:

  • Be at least 8 months of age

  • Demonstrate a stable, social and confident temperament

  • Show no signs of aggression or fear-based reactivity

  • Be physically healthy and suitable for therapy work

  • Be up to date with vaccinations, worming and parasite prevention

  • Be microchipped and registered with the local council

Training Duration

Training typically takes 6–12 months, depending on the individual dog’s maturity, temperament and consistency of handling. Each team progresses at their own pace to ensure readiness and reliability before entering therapy environments.

Program Focus

The program develops:

  • Advanced obedience and reliable responsiveness

  • Calm behaviour around mobility aids, medical equipment and busy environments

  • Appropriate greeting skills and safe interaction with children and vulnerable individuals

  • Ability to settle quietly for extended periods

  • Handler skills, advocacy and professionalism in community settings

Training includes one-on-one sessions, structured exposure outings and real-world scenario practice to prepare both handler and dog for safe and effective therapy work.

Assessment & Readiness

Dogs must pass behavioural and suitability assessments before being recommended for therapy work. Ongoing training and regular reassessment are encouraged to maintain high standards of safety, welfare and professionalism.

A Dog That Makes a Difference

A well-trained therapy dog can bring calm, comfort and connection where it needed most. The Super Canine Therapy Dog Program ensures you and your dog are prepared, professional and confident in making a meaningful impact within your community.
